I recently finished The Walking Dead: Book One, which combines the first several installments of The Walking Dead series of books.

In the beginning, Rick Grimes, a police officer, is introduced alongside his partner, Shane. They are in a gunfight with a rowdy truck driver, and Rick is suddenly shot in the shoulder by the driver. Rick is then seen in a hospital bed, where he struggles to get up and calls for a nurse. There is no answer from anyone inside his room, nor from in the hallway. He continually asks for help, and decides to try the elevator. A rotting corpse tumbles out as the doors open, and Rick moves on to the cafeteria. The door is blocked shut with a piece of wood. When Rick enters the cafeteria, he sees dozens of the rotting corpses like the one that fell out of the elevator, but these ones are alive. One of them follows Rick as he tries to escape, the zombie grabs him and they both fall down the stairs. The zombie's head snaps off on impact, and Rick immediately escapes to the parking garage.
His car is the only one left, but it is destroyed. He leaves the hospital, deciding to try to go home. He spots a bike, but there is a disgusting, naked zombie lying next to it. Wiping away a tear, Rick takes the bike and makes his way to his home. There is no one in it, and he goes back outside to investigate the rest of the town. Out of nowhere, he is hit in the head with a shovel.
The attacker is a young boy who thought Rick was one of the zombies, trying to eat him and his father. Rick wakes up on a bed inside the home of the two other survivors. The man, Morgan, explains to Rick that all media shut down weeks after these events started happening, so they knew nothing about the monsters except that they can be killed with a hit in the head. Rick says that he is trying to find his wife and son, and that they probably went to Atlanta to stay with Rick's in-laws.
Rick takes Morgan and his son, Duane, to the local police station. Rick shows them a room containing several guns. They pick up a few guns and some ammo. When they are ready to leave, Rick gives Morgan the keys to one of the police cars, and Rick takes a car for himself and says goodbye. Rick makes a stop at the place where he got the bike, and shoots the zombie lying there in the head, wiping away another tear. Rick later runs out of gas, and none of the gas stations are in order. He walks for a bit, and finds a farm house. Nothing is inside except a family of rotting corpses, and Rick immediately exits the house to throw up -- the smell is terrible. He goes into the barn where he sees a horse. He gets on its back and begins, once again, his trip to Atlanta.
