The Kill Order pages 191-220

Mark and Alec immediately flee the room, and run toward the exit.  They climb a few levels of stairs and continue running down a dark hallway.  Mark realizes that the roar of their pursuers has stopped completely.  They make their way to the room under which the Berg landed, and a flashlight's beam suddenly clicked onto them.  A woman tells them that they can not leave yet.

The people begin attacking Mark and Alec, and they fight back.  During the chaos, Alec and Mark pick up flashlights and begin using them as weapons.  There is finally just a small group of people between them and the door, and they charge at the group until they make it through the door.  They slam it, smashing fingers and bones, then they spin the wheel to lock the door.

They shine their new flashlights around the room and find the Berg that had landed.  They decide to make their getaway in the Berg, and Alec manages to open the hatch door.  After searching the inside of the Berg, they find a few workpads - all of them were working.  They suddenly hear a loud metallic sound and realize the landing pad had begun to rotate once more.

Mark closes the hatch door and Alec prepares the Berg for flight.  The hatch door is closing very slowly, and a man and a woman have already started climbing up the ramp.  These were the pilots of the Berg, who Mark and Alec heard talking earlier.  Mark kicks his foot at the woman and she tumbles out of the Berg.

Mark fights with the man.  The ramp is now almost closed, and Mark drags the man back so that half of his body is on the outside of the Berg.  The door closes on the man's chest, and Mark realizes something inside himself had cracked; he didn't know what he was doing.  He kicks the man out of the Berg to end his misery.

Mark thinks about what has just happened, and he knows that for a brief moment, he had lost his mind.  He finally realizes that he has the Flare.

Alec has finally prepared the controls of the Berg, and he is about to begin flying.  He notices something swinging down onto the window of the Berg, and the glass cracks.  Someone had swung a huge hammer onto the Berg.  The hammer comes down again, and a man starts climbing through the window.  The man grabs onto Mark as he tries to punch him out of the window, and Alec steps in and throws the hammer at the man's face.  He finally lets go and falls to the ground.  Alec finally lifts the Berg into the sky.

Mark throws up due to the sudden movement, and Alec quickly gets him some food -- he hasn't eaten in days.  Alec tells Mark they have parked in a cul-de-sac near Asheville.  Mark tells Alec about his moment of losing his mind until he finally falls asleep, and the dreams come once more.
