The Kill Order pages 161-190

The trapdoor closes, and Alec and Mark are left in total darkness.  They see a door and open it, revealing what Alec thinks is a generator for the Berg.  They heard a clang, and knew the Berg had started to land.  Alec and Mark hid in the back of the room, waiting for the Berg to leave.  Two people are heard talking about the virus, and one of them mentions that they've come up with a name for it -- the Flare.  (This is the same virus that plagues the entire world 13 years later in The Maze Runner series.)

Alec and Mark continue walking along the wall, and a red glow comes over them, making everything appear red.  They peer into the room the light is coming from, and see that it is indeed a Berg generator.  They continued searching the rooms until they found one with several bunks in it.  All of them were empty except one, which had a slumped figure sitting on it.  He didn't say anything except a few mumbles that Alec and Mark could not understand.  Mark moved in closer to try to hear him, and all he said was, "I didn't want to give her away. Not to those savages."

Mark tried asking the man many questions, but he didn't respond.  He said his name is Anton.  The man said he chose a settlement as a "test" two months earlier, and the little girl made him realize he had made a mistake.  Mark immediately realizes that he's talking about Deedee.  Anton starts to talk about how the virus was created before the solar flares.  They were created to quickly spread and kill anyone living in close quarters.  The plan was to wipe out half of the population and start over fresh, but the virus had quickly gotten out of control.  Anton told them that Lana and Trina were underground further in a bunker with his colleagues who were planning a revolt to try to get to Alaska, which appears to be somewhat of a safe area.  After telling the story, Anton quickly falls asleep.

Mark feels exhausted, and Alec convinces him that he needs to rest for at least an hour while he keeps watch.  As soon as Mark falls asleep, the dreams become more vivid than ever.

The mass of water is crashing down the subway, and the water is quickly up to their feet.  It is scorching hot and soaks through Mark's shoes, burning his feet.  After lots of struggling through the water, Alec makes it to the stairs, and helps Lana, Trina, Misty, Toad, and Mark up the stairs.  Everyone is safe except Baxter, who is still struggling.  Alec eventually pulls Baxter up, and the group walks through a door and begins climbing the stairs.

Alec had fallen asleep too, rather than keeping watch.  Alec realizes he accidentally left the workpad on, and the battery is finally drained.  They decided to leave Anton behind and go down to the meeting that he said his colleagues were attending.  They descended down the stairs until they found double doors that had voices coming from it.  They crawled into a corner of the room, hiding from the 40-50 people in the meeting.  There seemed to be nothing going on until a man walked into the auditorium.

The man started talking to the crowd about the traitors from Asheville and Alaska who had turned their backs on them.  The man reveals that the highly religious singers that Mark and Alec met were test subjects.  The man said that he had given the group the little girl and the two women who were with her.  Mark immediately knows he is talking about Deedee, Trina, and Lana.  Mark wants to leave to look for them, but Alec tells him the information will be worth hearing.  The man wraps up his speech by saying that they would get revenge on the Post-Flares Coalition, but first, he instructs the audience that there are two spies in the back of the room, and that he wanted them to be bound and gagged.
