The next day, after the group has left Jim behind, Shane and Rick decide to go hunting. Carl asks if he can come along, but Rick says they need to talk. Out of nowhere, Shane punches Rick in the face, saying it wasn't his fault, and Lori scratches him across the face to protect her husband. Shane runs off into the forest hysterically, and Rick runs after him. When Rick catches up, Shane has his gun pointed toward Rick, and he is screaming at him about how Rick has ruined his life and that he has nothing anymore. Shane tells him everything was perfect until Rick came back, and prepares to shoot Rick, when suddenly a bullet shoots through Shane's neck. Carl is seen holding up a gun, crying, yelling "Don't hurt my daddy again!" Shane falls down, dead.
There is a flash back to when the group is just outside of Atlanta, and Shane is comforting Lori. They both think that Rick is dead, and they eventually have sex near the cars.
Lori is at Shane's grave. She stays there until everyone else leaves, then spits on the grave. Dale and Rick are discussing the death of Shane, and Dale explains to Rick that what they need is a leader, and that Rick is the best option. Immediately after, Rick decides that as leader, he would make the group leave their camp in favor of a safer place. The next day, after packing up the RV, the group sets out. That night, their RV gets stuck in the road, and as they are trying to push it out of the way, they encounter a man and two teenagers. The man introduces himself as Tyreese. His daughter is Julie, and her boyfriend is Chris. Rick decides the trio should tag along with their group at least for the night. Lori chastises him for being so trusting.
The next day, Tyreese has a conversation with Rick about how he feels very guilty for killing a man who tried to rape his daughter. They spot a few zombies in the distance, and Rick and Tyreese quickly kill them.
